What English Summer Camp Students Should Know About Canada’s Capital City

Getting to spend a summer in Canada is an experience unlike any other. You’ll get to delve into Canadian history by visiting Upper Canada Village and experience the life of early pioneers. You’ll get to visit bustling Canadian cities like Montreal and Toronto. And, you’ll even get up close to some of Canada’s wildlife at Park Omega.
Besides these special trips, campers at Destination Canada can enjoy the thriving culture of Canada’s capital city throughout their stay. Whether they’re watching the beautiful the light show at Canada’s Parliament Buildings, or a going on a quiet stroll by the famous Rideau Canal, there’s plenty to see in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city.
Here’s a quick taste of some of the top sites you’ll see – and the fascinating stories behind them.
The Rideau Canal is a Top Attraction Located Right Beside Your English Summer Camp
Destination Canada is located right on the Carleton University campus. And, right beside that campus is the historic and beautiful Rideau Canal – a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Rideau Canal was built following the War of 1812 between Canada and the United States. It was originally designed to function as a strategic supply route – just in case the two countries went to war again. While it was never used for military purposes, the Rideau Canal has become a central part of Canada’s capital city.
During the chilly winter months, the canal freezes over and becomes the largest skating rink in the world. The 7.8 kilometre Rideau Canal Skateway holds the official record for the world’s largest naturally frozen ice rink, with a maintained skating surface of 165,621 square metres. Some university students and Ottawa residents even skate along the canal during their morning commute! But, during the summer months the Rideau Canal is still a popular attraction and the perfect spot for a walk or bike ride.

Byward Market is One of the Oldest Public Markets in Canada
During your first weekend at English summer camp, you’ll get to explore many of Ottawa’s top attractions as you enjoy a walking tour of the city. You’ll get to catch a glimpse of Canada’s parliament buildings, see the Rideau Canal, and even do some shopping at the famous Byward Market.
It is one of the oldest public markets in the country, and was created by the same person who oversaw the creation of the Rideau Canal: Lieutenant-Colonel John By.
The Parliament Buildings are a Must-See for Kids at Summer Camp for International Students
During the week, you’ll be busy at Destination Canada’s summer camp for international students. There will be opportunities to visit the nearby Calypso waterpark, and try laser tag and go-karting. During the evenings, you’ll also get to see the spectacular sound and light show at the nearby Parliament Buildings.
The sound and light show lights up the buildings with stories of Canada’s rich history. Here’s a small preview of last year’s version of the show:
