Learning English at Destination Canada: Your Child’s Daily Routine

At Destination Canada, students complete twenty-five hours of English instruction per week, participate in supervised sports and activities, explore local cities and historic sites, and make new friends from all of the world.
What does that schedule look like on a day-to-day basis?
Here’s a look at a typical weekday at Destination Canada, where kids build their English skills – and make memories to last a lifetime.
Kids Dive into Learning with an In-depth Morning Class
A typical day at Destination Canada’s international language school begins with breakfast at the Carleton university cafeteria and the morning English learning session.

Experienced instructors keep students engaged with a wide range of learning activities
Morning sessions are fully interactive, and cover subjects like grammar, vocabulary, and creative writing skills. From 9:15 am to 1:00 pm, students complete a wide range of learning activities, which are carefully evaluated by the instructor in order to identify weaknesses and challenge each student to meet their English language learning goals.
By 1:00 pm, students have earned their lunch break!

Afternoon English Classes Focus on Conversation & Canadian History
Afternoon sessions at Destination Canada run from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm, and focus on helping students practice conversation skills while learning about Canadian history and local geography.
Students are encouraged to speak up and participate in class discussions – giving them a chance to apply the grammar and vocabulary they learned during the morning study session. They also learn about the important historic sites and landmarks Destination Canada students get to visit while they study English in Canada – so they understand the cultural significance of the places they explore.
Afternoon Activities Combine Fun with English Language Learning
Afternoon activities give kids a chance to relax, try new sports and crafts, and enjoy their summer in Canada. From 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, students can play American football, practice tennis at one of Carleton’s six indoor tennis courts, and explore their creative side with arts and crafts – among many other activities.
Campers also get to visit Canada’s biggest water park, “Calypso”, located just a short drive away from Ottawa.

Destination Canada’s Olympic Games themed afternoon activities are a big hit with teens and kids
All activities are carefully supervised by experienced and friendly staff, who only speak to kids in English in order to complement and enhance their English language education.
Evening Activities Let Kids Discover Ottawa and Make New Friends
As Maria Fernanda Valderrama Vargas from Colombia remembers, “day after day I had the chance to practice my English not only inside the classroom but also during the extracurricular activities such as visits to museums, city tours, sports and evening activities.”
After taking an hour break for dinner, students enjoy evening activities like swimming at Carleton’s Olympic size indoor pool, or visits to Brewers Park and Mooney’s Bay.

Kids enjoy the light show at Canada’s Parliament Buildings while they study English in Canada
In addition, students enjoy supervised outings in Ottawa, including biking along Canada’s historic Rideau Canal, shopping at Byward Market, the sound and light show at Canada’s Parliament buildings, and go- karting and laser tag.
After a busy day, the whole summer camp gets together for the daily camp gathering from 9:30 pm – 10:15 pm. And after, by 10:30pm, kids are ready for bed, a good night’s sleep, and then a brand new day of learning English in Canada!
